1860s Spruce Gum Baseball Box Lid

1860s Spruce Gum Baseball Box Lid

From the earliest days of our nation’s baseball culture, this wickedly aged wood lid to an 1860’s Spruce Gum box pre-dates Topps’ chewing gum offerings by 80 years. Illustrates a pre-1870’s underhanded pitcher, with a printed introduction beginning, “This Gum, in its crude state, as gathered from the immense Spruce forests surrounding the lakes in the northern section of the state of Maine…” A beautiful vintage look, this item comes from an early baseball collection. Measures 4 ? x 7”, and is encased. LOA.
