Captivating poster of Panama Joe Gans' fight against Jack Stone scheduled for July 4, 1921, at the National Stadium Grounds in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There were a number of fighters going by the name Joe Gans, with numerous boxers having taken the name of an iconic African-American competitor who fought around the turn of the century. Panama Joe Gans was the World Colored Middleweight Champ for four years, shortly before the category was abolished. He was a great middleweight, but the better he fought the further he was pushed from a shot at a championship because of racial prejudice as well as the threat of his talent. Earlier in this year Gans had a very serious case of pneumonia, and after being away from the ring for about half a year, he made a comeback and fought 20 times in a little over seven months, winning all but once. Gans won this fight by way of KO in four rounds. Framed, measures 31x37". Also included is a separate 3.5x7" B and W photo of Gans.
