A Bronze Medal winner at the 1992 Olympics, sprinter Michael Bates turned his talents toward football, and as a kick return specialist with the Carolina Panthers captured the 1997 Mackey Award for the NFC Special Teams Player of the Year. On its base, there is a silver plaque which reads: "Michael Bates, Carolina Panthers, NFC Special Teams Player of the Year, 1997 Mackey Award, National Football League Players Association." The silver-tomed metal trophy stands 14" tall including 4" wood base. There is some wear to the finish at the head, shoulders, right arm, and face. The ttrophy is loose but does not detach from the base.
