1969 Arts & Letters Gold Plated Travers Winning Trophy Cup from the Personal Collection of Braulio Baeza

1969 Arts & Letters Gold Plated Travers Winning Trophy Cup from the Personal Collection of Braulio Baeza

During the 1969 Triple Crown season, Arts and Letters emerged as a tenacious and popular star, dueling with Majestic Prince in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before winning the Belmont by 5 1/2 lengths with regular jockey Braulio Baeza aboard. The talented chestnut’s decisive victories continued to mount as the summer unfolded. Arts and Letters arrived at Saratoga with an impressive record and in top form. He crushed the field in the Jim Dandy Stakes then dominated the 100th running of the Travers Stakes, where his 6 1/2-length victory equalled a track record and was a crowning highlight of a magical season. Two more explosive wins would follow in the Woodward Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup whereupon Arts and Letters was deservedly named Horse of the Year. This winner’s trophy, an incredible artifact associated with this landmark renewal of the prestigious “Mid-Summer Derby,” is engraved “NYRA The Travers SARATOGA 1969 Won By Rokeby Stables ARTS AND LETTERS Jockey Braulio Baeza.” It stands 13” tall and is 9.5” wide with separate lid, stamped sterling, with 100% gold plating still intact. In NRMT condition, this piece was showcased at Equestricon ‘17 in Saratoga, New York. Includes win photo signed by Braulio Baeza.
