At first glance, this Gable-signed 8 x 10 promotion still seems to capture Gable in his most famous role as Rhett Butler in “Gone With the Wind”. Such was the magnetism of the role that Gable could have been clad in kilts and still recall Rhett. However, the Southern Gentleman garb he wears - white suit and ascot, and the walking stick in one hand and cigar and wide-brim hat in the other - was for another flick, “Band of Angels” (1957). Nearly 20 years post-“Wind”, Gable hadn’t seemed to age a day and was still the debonair plantation fop, thus the producers tried to cash in on the old mystique. In vain, it turned out, as the film (in which his character falls for a part-black slave played by Yvonne DeCarlo but loses everything when the Union Army storms through) was here and gone with the wind. The crude copycat attempt was roundly panned and has since been called “Gone With the Wind on Drugs”. Though Gable rarely brought up the movie, he did sign the promo shot, “To Scotty, Best wishes from Clark Gable.” Signature in blue pen blends somewhat into the grass in the photo but grades a nice 7/10. Photo itself is EX-MT w/just a few specks here and there.
