Regarded as the greatest natural chess player who ever lived, the Cuban-born Capablanca reputedly never read a chess book or studied moves, merely going on instinct. From 1916 to 1924 he did not lose a single game in competition. Working concurrently in the Cuban Foreign office, he was cherished as a national hero. During a tournament in New York, he wrote this letter in Spanish on the stationery of the Hotel Great Northern. The letter is well preserved and his signature "J.R. Capablanca" is clear and vivid, rating a near-10. Also included is a matted sepia-toned photo of him towering over the board he so dominated.
