Lou Gehrig bat sells for $131,769 at Lelands auction
This bat broke the bank.
A bat used by Lou Gehrig at the dawn of his Hall of Fame career recently sold for $131,769 at auction through Lelands.
The bat, which the auctionhouse says was used around 1925-26, is an extremely rare find. The Iron Horse only ordered about 13 bats a season — he used an ash stick — according to data kept by Louisville Slugger and shared with the Smithsonian Channel's "Sports Detectives." Gehrig used a heavy — 36- or 37-ounce — bat with a thick handle, so he didn't break many pieces of lumber.
