1949 Jackie Robinson All Star Game Used Bat

1949 Jackie Robinson All Star Game Used Bat

Jackie Robinson didn't just break the color barrier; he smashed it to pieces with a baseball bat. The first african-american player to be allowed in modern Major League Baseball, Robinson used his character and unbelievable talent to challenge peoples' preconceptions, and helped bring an end to years of segregation in baseball. He could even be considered a forefather of the larger cultural shift towards equal rights that would come in the late sixties and early seventies, but all he really wanted was to get the credit he deserved in the sport he played. According to Robinson, "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being." Respect isn't an issue for Robinson anymore; he has become universally considered one of the most incredible and important players in the sport. This item, a bat used by Robinson in his first-ever All-Star Game, is 35 inches and 35 ounces of pure baseball history. A model S100 Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger, this bat features its model number and a small mounting hole in the knob, and has Robinson's facsimile signature charred into the barrel, along with "All-Star Game" and "Brooklyn 1949." Just under this, a light ring has been left behind in the wood, as this bat was used in the Robinson home as part of a gate. It is definitely game used, but it is hard to believe the amazing shape this bat has maintained over the past sixty years, and easily stands as one of the best looking display pieces we've seen to date. This item comes from the Robinson family collection, with an LOA signed by none other than Jackie's wife, Rachel Robinson.
