1880s Carlisle Indians Baseball Cabinet Photo by J.N. Choate

1880s Carlisle Indians Baseball Cabinet Photo by J.N. Choate

This is a stunning high-grade cabinet card of four Native American students of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, later home to Jim Thorpe. This truly rare find is in near pristine condition, with perfect detail, resolution and balance of light. By J.N. Choate a master lensman and the principal photographer for Carlisle his name is synonymous with the school. His works are now in the annals of history, kept at the Smithsonian and the glass plate negative from this very image can be viewed in their database (see below). The Carlisle Indian Industrial School operated in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, from 1879 through 1918 and of course produced sports icon Jim Thorpe. Except for a pinprick on bottom the cabinet card is a gorgeous NRMT and measures 4.25x6.5". At the height of political incorrectness, the "YA" on their uniforms stands for "Young Indians." The only specimen known to exist, even the Smithsonian does not have a print, only the negative. (NOTE 1: The negative in the Smithsonian can be viewed here: http://siris-archives.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=127RV45821A22.83921&limitbox_1=LO01+=+naa&menu=search&aspect=subtab157&npp=50&ipp=20&spp=20&profile=all&ri=1&source=~!siarchives&index=.GW&term=baseball+Carlisle,&aspect=subtab157&x=8&y=8#focus) (NOTE 2: The "YA" is referenced as "Young Indians" in the book "The American Indian Integration of Baseball") By Jeffrey P. Powers-Beck.
