1960 Lindy McDaniel Fireman of the Year Trophy-The Very First Year For the Award
One of the very first relief specialists, Lindy McDaniel won this significant prize in 1960 - the very first Fireman of the Year Award. The Cardinals closer compiled a 12-2 mark out of the pen that season with 22 saves and an E.R.A. of 1.29. The trophy highlights a pitcher with fireman's hat and reads: "FIREMAN TROPHY AWARDED BY THE SPORTING NEWS OFFICIAL NATIONAL LEAGUE WARREN GILES TO LINDY McDANIEL ST. LOUIS CARDINALS NATIONAL LEAGUE'S No. 1 RELIEF PITCHER OF 1960." Measuring 25" x 14", It has a repaired fracture on the leg but other than that flaw, it is in EX condition and comes right from McDaniel. The Fireman of the Year award was a precursor to the Rolaids Relief Man award in 1976. McDaniel enjoyed a 21-year career from 1955 to 1975, pitching in 987 games. The religious righty attributed his longevity to: "Freedom from serious injury, an easy pitching delivery, clean living and good conditioning, a high motivation level, a strong belief in God—especially during times of adversity—the opportunity to pitch and self-discipline."
