Joe Sewell Portrait Photo
Joe Sewell was the toughest hitter to strike out in the history of major league baseball. During his 11 seasons with the Indians and 3 with the Yankees, in 7,132 at-bats, he fanned a miniscule 114 times for a rate of one strikeout per 63 at-bats. In 1932 he set a record that still stands: he struck out only 3 times the entire season! Cleveland called him up from the minors in 1920 and he batted .329 down the stretch to help the Indians to a pennant. Sewell held the record for most consecutive games played (1,103) until Lou Gehrig bested the mark en route to his celebrated streak of 2,130 straight games played. Masterful shot (3-1/4 X 4-1/4”) of this Chief of Indians. He is posed in uniform, glove on his knee, with a big smile. Background shows a slightly blurred vision of a seated player and a sparsely populated stands. Pic is EX-MT. Partially obscured stamp on the verso, of Culver Photographers.
