1870s Lemon Peel Hybrid Belted Baseball

1870s Lemon Peel Hybrid Belted Baseball

The "lemon peel" baseball is a four-piece hand-stitched leather skinned ball that was one of the first types of baseballs. Dark leather was used for the cover because it was readily available and easier for the players to see when the ball was hit in the air on a clear day. This early (1870's) lemon peel hybrid belted baseball has one seam that has split apart; despite that it is in nice condition. This is one of the earliest examples of a baseball that we have handled.
