1934 Lou Gehrig Signed Player’s Contract

1934 Lou Gehrig Signed Player’s Contract

It’s considered by most baseball historians to be the Iron Horse’s finest year. It was this season that Gehrig would join Nap Lajoie, Ty Cobb and Jimmie Foxx as the only American Leaguers to date to secure the coveted Triple Crown. The numbers are just outrageous: forty-nine home runs, 165 runs batted in and a .363 batting average. A bargain at any price for the Yankees; a steal at $23,000.American League Uniform Player’s Contract is just like all the others you’ve seen in the past, with the exception of the royal name and date. In terms of historical significance, few could measure up to this Magna Carta of baseball history. Second page is dated “10th day of March, A.D. 1933,” and signed in perfect black ink by Jacob Ruppert, E.G. Barrow and “Henry Louis Gehrig.” Strange that a contract would be signed for a season that was over a year away, but “1934” typed on first page of contract, and “Lou Gehrig 1934” in vintage ink on back, leaves no doubt. Perhaps the Yankees were just particularly gung-ho about securing their star first baseman’s services for another year. And, obviously, rightfully so. Aside from the original storage folds, the document remains in NRMT condition. Keep it that way—this is one for the ages.
