1958 Cassius Clay Boxing Trophy

1958 Cassius Clay Boxing Trophy

Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali is best remembered for his illustrious professional career in which he won the World Heavyweight Title on three different occasions. Before that, however, Clay was one of the most accomplished amateurs in the history of the sport. He had been focused on boxing since he was twelve and trained with the single-mindedness of a future champion. He started boxing at the amateur level in his hometown and captured the AAU and Golden Gloves titles in 1959 and 1960. He competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, where Ali won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division. Presented here is a trophy given to Cassius Clay in 1958 as a division winner in the series in Louisville, Kentucky, Tomorrow’s Champion. Tomorrow’s Champion was a local television show in Louisville which was run by Clay trainer Joe Martin as part of his gym’s amateur program. This program is referenced in the Thomas Hauser biography of Ali, Muhammad Ali: His Life And Times. This trophy, won by Cassius Clay in 1958 as part of that program is 9 ?” high. It has a metal fighter standing on a bakelite base which is 3 ?” in diameter. The plaque on the side reads, TOMORROW’S CHAMPION WAVE-TV DIVISION WINNER. On the inside in red marker is written “won by Cassius Clay 1958.” The trophy comes with a letter of authenticity from longtime Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali collector who got this trophy in Louisville after the Columbia Street Gym run by Joe Martin closed.
