1973 Secretariat Belmont Stakes Nail

1973 Secretariat Belmont Stakes Nail

In the days that followed Secretariat’s legendary 1973 Belmont Stakes, exercise rider Jim Gaffney watched as each shoe and each nail was removed from the hooves of the Triple Crown winner. Gaffney saved these artifacts, knowing that the hardware faithfully carried a champion into history. The nail offered in this lot is one of those rare few he collected associated with this amazing performance. It is affixed to lucite with a wood base where Gaffney hand wrote “Secretariat, The Belmont Stakes, 1973, #1 of 32” underneath. Comes with signed 11x14” photo of Ron Turcotte with “Big Red the Greatest Horse Ever” inscription.
