Babe Ruth Glass Plate Negative For Image Used On His 1933 Goudey #181 Card

Babe Ruth Glass Plate Negative For Image Used On His 1933 Goudey #181 Card

Tucked away for decades in the Brown Brothers Archive and stored in a simple envelope, the offered glass plate negative features one of the most memorable images in the hobby and was also used for the 1933 Goudey #181 card.To date, this is the most significant negative to be found in the extensive Brown Brothers Archive as well as the most exciting.Although it was a known fact that Conlon took photographs for the other cards in the 1933 Goudey set, the origins of this image mostly remained a mystery and before its discovery it was not known that Charles Conlon took the photo used for this iconic card.Taken in 1929, this 4x5" negative is in fine condition and features writing by Conlon on the actual glass at the top that identifies it as "Babe Ruth (Yankees)."Amazingly it still lives in its original envelope with Conlon's writing on it identifying it as "Babe Ruth, Yankees Sitting in Dugout" with a "29" in the bottom right corner signifying the year it was taken.Other writing in Conlon's hand is noticed on the back as the envelope was used before and then reused. To date, there are no Type 1 photos of this image that we know of.We have found several prints from this negative in the archive however; they were made off of this negative and were printed decades after it was taken. Now's your chance to own this 1 of 1 piece of baseball and collecting history.
