Circa 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Original Glass Negative

Original glass plate negative picturing two unidentified participants in the Vanderbilt Cup auto race, circa 1908. The team members are seated together in their vehicle, which is numbered "5" on the side. The Vanderbilt Cup, which was founded in 1904 by William Kissam Vanderbilt II, was an international race and the first major trophy in American auto racing. The race was held annually in Long Island, New York, from 1904 to 1910, after which the venue moved to various locales in the United States. The race was halted in 1917 due to World War I and did not resume again until 1936. It was run sporadically after that, with the last race taking place in 1968. The negative (7x5") displays light scratches and a tiny crack along the right border. In Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
