Circa 1960-61 Ernie Davis Syracuse University Game Worn Jersey

Circa 1960-61 Ernie Davis Syracuse University Game Worn Jersey

For those who have seen the Hollywood motion picture "The Express," this jersey screams holy grail. Ernie Davis' short lived career was one of the most historic football stories of all-time; yet it is not common household knowledge. Growing up in Elmira, NY, the "Elmira Express" was a talent that was unheard of and not seen since the legendary Hall of Fame Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown. At a time when Brown was dominating college football two hours away from Elmira, a young Ernie Davis began to idolize the legend. What Davis did not expect however was to be persuaded by Jim Brown to attend Syracuse University when he graduated from high school. Throughout his college career, Ernie Davis wore 44 in honor of Jim Brown and became the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. You will not find a more unique and scarce jersey than this historic Wilson #44 jersey worn by Davis as a member of the Syracuse Orange during his 1960-61 Heisman Trophy winning season. This jersey is a white, dureen jersey that has "44" in dark blue (sewn with orange thread) on the front and back. On the front tail of the jersey is a Wilson size 48 tag. This jersey shows great use with blood stains, paint transfers, dirt stains and a repair. One can imagine the history that it has been through at a time when African Americans did not have the respect they do today in college football. This is one of the best college jerseys that exists and has tremendous history from the first season in which an African American won the Heisman Trophy. Comes with a detailed LOA showing Ernie Davis wearing the style of jersey along with a description of the traits that make this an authentic game worn Ernie Davis jersey. Even though he was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in 1962, the NFL sadly never saw Davis as he passed away from Leukemia before he got to step foot on the field. Being that he never wore a professional jersey in a game, this jersey is one of the very few that he wore during his career.
