Lead Belly, Alan Lomax & Woody Guthrie Signed Book

Lead Belly, Alan Lomax & Woody Guthrie Signed Book

American folk music giants Lead Belly, Alan Lomax & Woody Guthrie -- whose autographs have long made collectors salivate -- all signed this copy of the 1936 Lomax book about Lead Belly's life and songs. To set the scene, Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) was doing 30 years for murder in Texas when discovered in '33 by Lomax, a white folklorist seeking to find musical talent in prisons. . Blown away by the burly black man's songs and prison survival stories, he began recording and writing with him; the 2 wrote the classic song "Goodnight Irene." When Lead Belly got out, Lomax oversaw his performing career and brought him to the New York folk scene, where he met Guthrie. About that time, Lomax penned the book, inside the cover of which are the 3 men's prized signatures. "Huddie Ledbetter" actually appears twice on separate pages, one including his Manhattan address. Woody Guthrie has signed "Had a hell of a good time tonight -- Woody". This was likely obtained by a leftist New Yorker (big supporters of these artists at the time) who went to one of their all night jam sessions. All the signatures are vibrant and radiant, grading out NRMT. The book is NRMT, rare dj is VG+. An unspeakably rare treasure.
