Orr, Mantle, DiMaggio Soar in a Dazzling Lelands 2019 Winter Classic

A Bobby Orr 1966 Topps USA Test #35 PSA Mint 9 sold for a world record $204,020 in the Lelands Winter 2019 Classic Auction, which closed on Feb. 1. The sale of the highest-graded Orr rookie card ever is the most ever for a hockey card produced in the the U.S.

To test U.S. interest in hockey prior to the NHL expanding from six to 12 teams for the 1967-68 season, Topps released a “TEST” extremely limited issue of its 1966-67 hockey cards to the California market. The Orr #35 from this TEST set is the apex of the set and is considered the most sought-after hockey card in existence.

Additional auction highlights include Jose Bautista’s 2015 ALDS epic bat flip home run ball ($28,252), a 1981 Lawrence Taylor Giants game-worn, photo-matched “rookie” jersey ($54,301), a 1946 Jackie Robinson Minor League debut ticket stub ($9,766), a 1937 Hank Greenberg Tigers game-used and team-signed bat ($25,063), a 1923 Yankee Stadium inauguration program ($19,031), a Joe DiMaggio 1950-51 Yankees game-worn uniform ($227,854), a rare 1941 Detroit Tigers All-Star Game pennant ($12,224), and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 2 ($22,206).

Among the other knockout auction items were the greatest boxing1910 T218 Champions complete graded set – #1 on PSA Registry ($26,870), a Jim Palmer 1972 Orioles game-worn jersey ($14,682), a Johnny Bench Reds game-used jersey ($15,727), one of the finest Ty Cobb signed photos known ($19,031), Willie Shoemaker's 1986 Kentucky Derby winner "Ferdinand" race-worn saddle ($14,298), a Babe Ruth 1924 barnstorming real photo postcard ($19,506), and Ruth's 1932 Federal Income Tax Return ($8,350).

The Lelands Winter 2019 Classic Auction also featured a George Washington lock of hair emanating from the family of Alexander Hamilton ($35,764), a 1938 Gum Inc. Horrors of War unopened wax pack

($10,028), a 1928 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig "Al Smith Presidential Campaign" signed Martin Guitar ($7,534), a 1955-56 Philadelphia Warriors world champion team signed basketball and presentation tie bar ($7,161), and a collection of Mickey Mantle signed photos ($90k+).
