12/12/65 Gale Sayers SIX Touchdown Game Full Ticket PSA NM 7 (Pop 1 Highest Graded)
Presented is the opportunity to possess a rare full ticket to the December 12, 1965, game between the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers in which the magnificent Gale Sayers played what some have called the greatest individual game performance in NFL history. The Bears were playing at home at Wrigley Field, and after the game began, the field quickly became a sea of mud. Sayers was a rookie running back whose forte was a marvelous ability to change directions in a flash and then accelerate. On this day, he used that skill to the utmost. Sayers scored his first touchdown after catching a short pass and turning it into an 80-yard touchdown. He followed that with touchdown runs of 21, 7, 50, and 1 yard. By the fourth quarter, the field was even muddier, and Sayers was within a touchdown of tying the all-time single game record for touchdowns at six - a record jointly held by Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals in 1929 and Dub Jones of the Cleveland Browns in 1951. Sayers then tied the record in style, scoring on a wondrous 85-yard punt return. The muddy field seemed to hamper every player but Sayers. "I can still see the 49ers sloshing around in the mud," Sayers recounted to the Los Angeles Herald in 1985. "It seemed like everyone was slowed but me." Sayers played only seven NFL seasons, and only the first five were truly full seasons. He wound up with 4,956 yards rushing, nine touchdowns on passes, and eight touchdowns on returns. In his short pro career, Sayers burned through the NFL like a meteor before flaming out because of injuries, and on this December Sunday afternoon, he burned at his brightest. The full ticket measures 1.5x5". It has been encapsulated and graded PSA Full NM 7. PSA Pop 1, the HIGHEST GRADED.
