1888 Champions of Games & Sports Kimball Advertising Poster (N184)

1888 Champions of Games & Sports Kimball Advertising Poster (N184)

The only specimen of this fantastic poster we know to exist. Smashing N184 advertising poster promotes this early and most desired baseball card set. From the 1888 Wm. S. Kimball & Company “Champions of Games and Sports” it illustrates 22 of the 50 sumptuous cards from this early and important tobacco card issue. This luscious litho specimen features some amazing baseball, boxing, and other “sports” luminaries: John L. Sullivan (Champion Heavy Weight Pugilist of the World), Jem Smith (Champion Heavy Weight Pugilist of England), Phillip Casey (Champion Base Ball Player), Dell Darling (Champion Base Ball Catcher), Isaac Murphy (Champion Colored Jockey), and even Annie Oakley (Champion Lady Rifle Shot of the World). The graphics are outstanding, the colors are brilliant (about an 8/10) and the beautiful matte finish (as opposed to the normally "glossy" Allen & Ginter posters) makes this a sight to behold. It is also an unusual format, as far as its 28x13" size, and the fact that this is a simple "poster" and does not come with the metal “calendar rod” that the Ginter's did. There is some minor edge damage rips which can be easily and reasonably restored. There are some very minor tears and a little bit of creasing and the poster is mounted on cardboard. We have chosen not to restore the poster leaving it up to the buyer. We did this to accentuate the fresh and untouched nature of the piece. This important relic has remained in an important West Coast collection for years and this is the first time it has seen the light of day.
