1888 Duke Cigarettes 2 Complete Tobacco Premium Albums
Collection of two rare 1888 tobacco premium albums, both issued by W. Duke, Sons & Co. In the 1880s, in addition to card inserts, tobacco companies often offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with the tobacco, one coupon per pack. Each premium album of 20 pages featured images of all subjects (usually fifty different) in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly prized by collectors. They feature a diverse range of topics, including birds, fish, historical figures, etc. This particular collection includes the following: - Costumes of All Nations (10-3/8” x 6-3/4”): Completely intact and with beautiful colors, square corners and clean edges! Minor flaws are a 2” crease (and a ½” tear, cover only) on the bottom right corner affecting the first 4 pages and the lightest crease on the top right corner of many inside pages. - Yacht Colors of the World (10-3/8” x 6-3/4”). Again, completely intact, with beautiful colors, clean edges and square corners! Minor flaws here are a vertical crease ¾” from the edge on the back cover, a slight amount of irregular paper loss on the back cover, and a slight crease/chip taken out of the bottom right corner of the album cover. All told, these two albums represent rare and very attractive examples of late 19th century tobaccopremium albums, both issued by Duke. A beautiful, enjoyable trip back in time!
