1888 New England Suffragette Broadside - Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison
Historic 1888 New England Suffragette broadside is the only one we know of in existence, featuring several luminaries of the time. The date is listed as May 30. Based on perpetual calendar dates that some of the foreign suffragettes were in America, we believe the year must have been 1888. The movement is well represented in the star-studded lineup of speakers, including Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Elizabeth Stanton, Laura Chant, Alli Trygg, Baroness Gripenberg, Zerelda Wallace, Lucy Stone, Mary Livermore, Ednah Cheney and Mary Eastman. Famous orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass is also listed among the speakers, as well as a few other men, including William Garrison, Jr., Henry Blackwell, and Charles Ames. Another nod to the empowerment of women can be found on the bottom, which reads "MUSIC BY THE MARIAN OSGOOD ORCHESTRA." This orchestra was the first ladies' orchestra set up for professional work in the United States, and Osgood was one of the preeminent violinists of the time. The broadside measures 5.63x 9.38" and has three folds but is otherwise NM. It would be another three decades before the fruits of their labor would be realized with the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which finally granted women the right to vote.
