1889 Goodwin & Co. Baseball Round Album Advertising Poster
1889 Goodwin & Company Baseball Round Album Advertising Poster. The only specimen known of this advertising poster for the famous “Baseball Round Album” as it is known in baseball collecting circles. The album was received in the mail to the most hard core of collector/smokers, “Presented Upon Return of 75 of our Certificates to the Smokers.” The poster pictures the cover and four of the pages from the album including two impressive single pages featuring Cap Anson and John Montgomery Ward. There are two multiple player pages show casing Mickey Welch, J.M. Ward, Buck Ewing, Tim Keefe, James O‘Rourke, George Gore, Roger Connor, and Hardy Richardson in marvelous Victorian montages worthy of this, the apex of 19th century baseball graphics. From a much heralded find of this year, the poster was recently discovered by a book dealer at an Upstate New York estate sale. Although two other dealers had already been through the home this still lay undiscovered on an old dresser perched on top of a pile of old books. Realizing what he had the dealer promptly consigned it to Lelands.com. Don’t ever tell us there are no more great finds out there! The poster measures 28.5x20” and is in overall very good condition with some minor tearing and creasing. A more detailed condition report is available upon request. It is 100% unrestored and untouched which makes this a fresh hobby commodity in original condition. The original brass plated metal bar is at top for this to hang at the local tobacconist is there and complete. The Knapp and Company imprimatur is imprinted in the bottom right corner. There are two other specimens known of this poster, one being heavily restored. Both are larger format making this the only known specimen. Furthermore, when Jefferson Burdick wrote his original Card Collectors American Card Catalogue he valued the Honus Wagner Card at $50 and more common album this piece advertises for $10. You do the math. The pinnacle of baseball collecting.
