1890s August Belmont "La Tosca" Occupational Shaving Mug

1890s August Belmont "La Tosca" Occupational Shaving Mug

From a bygone era comes this elegant occupational shaving mug circa 1890s, which reads in gold gilt "W.J. Kroll, La Tosca Tent N-370." In the center is a hand painted image of a horse head surrounded ornately by a floral design. This mug is historically significant, La Tosca was a race mare owned by August Belmont, during the early days of American horseracing and in New York and its environs. As a race mare she won the 1891 Swift Stakes, and was forever called "my beautiful La Tosca" by then-owner August Belmont. The gold gilt is a bit worn on the rim, otherwise NRMT. Measures 3.75" high.
