1894 Inaugural Princess of Wales Stakes Whip Used by Winning Jockey Tommy Loates (ex-Sotheby's)

1894 Inaugural Princess of Wales Stakes Whip Used by Winning Jockey Tommy Loates (ex-Sotheby's)

Incredible for age and content, this whip was used by Tommy Loates to win the Inaugural Princess of Wales Stakes in 1894 on spectacular thoroughbred Isinglass. Toward the bottom of the whip there is a small plate that reads "Whip used by T. Loates on Isinglass in Princess of Wales Stakes New Market, 1894." Loates was a three-time British Flat Racing championship jockey, while Isenglass finished first in 11 of his 12 races. Has a Sotheby's tag from when it was sold in the November 13, 1996, auction.
