This photo dated from 1898 is the earliest known Christy Mathewson team photograph. The 4.5x5.5" shot shows the Honesdale Base Ball club and has the entire roster listed on the bottom border. Mathewson is sitting second from left in the middle row. The top border of the photo has "Honesdale Base Ball Club 1898" written in black fountain pen. This is as rare as they come and was acquired directly from a famed local Mathewson collector. Top right corner has slight paper loss and both left corners has minor creases, but otherwise EX+. Mathewson was an elite pitcher and consummate gentleman during his 17 year career, posting stunning stats like his 2.13 lifetime ERA, 79 shutouts, and a 373-188 record, to go along with a 1905 World Series victory and numerous other accolades. He is widely considered to be one of the best to ever play the great game of baseball.
