1898 New York Giants Polo Grounds Sterling Silver Season Pass – Presented to Groundbreaking Disabled Entertainer

1898 New York Giants Polo Grounds Sterling Silver Season Pass – Presented to Groundbreaking Disabled Entertainer

New to the market, these ornate season passes are among the most desired entities in the hobby as less than a handful of each are known to exist. Measuring 4.5x6", this ornate sterling silver pass reads, "The New York Baseball Club, 1898, Tenders Mr. Marshall P. Wilder the Courtesy of the Polo Grounds." The name is engraved on the front and the rest is in raised characters in this incredible find, which comes with the original custom black leather case with Wilder's name etched in gold leaf, in NRMT condition. Also included is a 5x7" Type I cabinet card of a tuxedo-clad Wilder with Apeda Studio label on verso. Each piece is stunning individually, in age, rarity and design - collectively this is an offering that should appeal to any enthusiast.Marshall Pinckney Wilder (1859–1915), the groundbreaking humorist, was one of the first motion picture stars, recording his first in 1897 and receiving $600, a huge sum at the time. Refusing offers from exploitative men such as PT Barnum, he became one of the first persons with a disability to become a celebrity on his own terms, not allowing his dwarfism to be used as an excuse for cheap laughs. His son, Marshall Wilder Jr. became a groundbreaker in his own right in the field of television transmission and also helped to develop the first smart bomb.
