One of the most desired entities in the hobby, this sterling silver season pass is a fresh find, and one of a very few known to exist. It reads: "CINCINNATI BASE BALL PARK 1899 COMPLIMENTS OF MR, MARSHALL P. WILDER - ADMITTING," with the president's facsimile signature and "PRESIDENT" also engraved on the pass. The lot includes an unusual leather-bound promotional book that measures 4.5x6" with three Type 1 oversize and hand-colored Carte de Visites showing Wilder in various roles. His name is engraved on the book as well, with an art nouveau design. There is also a custom black leather case, imprinted: “Marshall P. Wilder” etched in gold leaf. The pass is NM.Marshall Pinckney Wilder (1859–1915), the groundbreaking humorist, was one of the first motion picture stars, shooting his first in 1897 and receiving $600 - a huge sum at the time. Refusing offers from exploitative men such as PT Barnum, he became one of the first people with a disability to become a celebrity on his own terms, never allowing his dwarfism to be used as an excuse for cheap laughs. His son, Marshall Wilder Jr., became a groundbreaker in his own right in the field of television transmission and also helped develop the first smart bomb.
