1902 Stanley Cup Program - Toronto vs. Winnipeg

1902 Stanley Cup Program - Toronto vs. Winnipeg

Rare souvenir program issued for the 1902 Stanley Cup, played between the Toronto Wellingtons and Winnipeg Victorias. This is the earliest Stanley Cup program we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen an earlier example. The fold-over program, which was issued as a promotional piece by Graham & Rolston, a Winnipeg hardware store, lists the venue ("Auditorium Rink, Winnipeg") and dates ("January 21-23-25 1902") on the front cover. The left side of the interior provides a history of the Stanley Cup from the year of its inception, 1893, through 1901. The right side of the interior lists the starting lineups for both the Wellingtons and Victorias. The text on the back cover reads "With Compliments of Graham & Rolston Hardware Merchants 220 Portage Avenue Winnipeg." In January, 1902, the Toronto Wellingtons challenged the defending champion Winnipeg Victorias for the Stanley Cup, with a best of three series agreed upon to decide the victor. Winnipeg retained the Cup by sweeping the series in two games, winning both by the identical score 5-3. The program (5.5x6.5"; unfolded) displays a few light creases, as well as both paper residue and slight paper loss in the upper left corner of the back cover from having once been affixed to an album page.
