1910 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics Mounted Montage Photograph
Resplendent image of these “World’s Champions” are inset into two wonderful stadium scenes. At the top is the playing field of Shibe Park with action shots of Ira Thomas and his ace pitcher Jack Coombs with Danny Murphy in the center. They are bookended by two fabulous rearing white elephants. Below, are 20 headshots in wonderful striped pillbox caps including Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Home Run Baker, Eddie Collins and most prominently Connie Mack in center with his tie dipping down into the luscious stadium scene. They frame a wonderful image of the Shibe facade with thousands of Athletics fans milling about waiting to enter the gates for their first World Championship. Overall about 10x14”, with excellent contrast and in excellent condition. Stadium-oriented montages of this type were rarely done. This represents the high water mark of early baseball graphic design. From an important “Philadelphia” collection, this is the first time it has been offered publicly.
