1910’s Christy Mathewson Fade Away Gum Box
Box for American Chicle gum features the classic American baseball hero of the decade, Christy Mathewson as its promoter. Pasted to the underside of the lid is a full color ad with image of Mathewson, one of the original 5 inductees into baseball’s Hall of Fame. Box was once was filled with pieces of this gum (2 for 1 cent as advertised) and the lid was propped upright by a piece of string on either side to reveal this eye-catching sign. Only the left side retains its original string. “Signal for Fade Away Ball Gum and your troubles are due for a strike out” informs the catchy phrase. Box measures 2x5x7.5”, VG.
