1915 Folk-Art Violin Case With Baseball Scene

1915 Folk-Art Violin Case With Baseball Scene

A unique example of American folk art, this circa 1915 hand-painted violin case depicts a batter tensed to swing at an incoming pitch. The game scene includes a catcher, umpire and three players all cocked for instant action. Though the artist is unknown, his or her talent is vividly evident in the tension and focus of the figures, the realistic play of lighting, the folds and creases in the clothing of the players, and in the details of equipment. The curved surface of the violin case adds a truly amazing almost 3-D perspective to the scene. The black violin case is in overall excellent condition, proof that through the years its owners have taken special care to respect and preserve this wonderful artwork. We’ve never encountered such a superb example of the national pastime rendered in a folk art image. It is truly a masterpiece of the genre, an item meant for the most discerning collector.
