1916 Christy Mathewson Signed Letter Regarding Protested Game (PSA)

1916 Christy Mathewson Signed Letter Regarding Protested Game (PSA)

Magnificent framed piece includes a typewritten dating from 1916 sent by Christy Mathewson in regards to a protested game. The standard piece of typing paper is on letterhead from "The Cincinnati Exhibition Company operating The Cincinnati BaseBall Club," and dated August 18. Mathewson, serving as player/manager of the Reds, minced no words in his response to the protest from the "Philadelphia club" in his missive to NL president John K. Tener, stating, "If you had been personally present and seen the protested play you would consider this protest a joke." Next to the letter is a 6x8" photo of Mathewson shaking hands with John McGraw before a game, though neither looks thrilled at the experience. Signature on the letter is in 7/10 pencil, piece is ornately framed to roughly 23x18". The call in question regarded fan interference on a batted ball and Mathewson seems to make a compelling case, citing that "Umpire Rigler" indicated that he had seen the interference. Beautiful vintage look. Comes with PSA LOA.
