1920 The Sporting News Record Book w/Babe Ruth on Cover
Presented is The Sporting News Record Book for 1920, a fascinating publication that features a photo of Babe Ruth on the cover. Under the cover photo of Ruth is printed,"'Babe Ruth' Who Established New Home Run Record During Season of 1919." The approx. 3x5.5" book has 72 pages packed with baseball records for both individual and team batting, pitching, and fielding statistics, plus a listing of stolen base leaders. The book still spells the sport as "Base Ball." There is a section of changes to the playing rules, but these changes are called "Playing Code Changes." One of the changes in the "code" was to ban all "freak" pitches, by which the baseball is doctored with "foreign substances," with the exception of the spitball, which these rules allowed for another year. This book also provides short biographies of stars, three or four to a team. Interestingly, the biography of Ruth still lists the Babe as a pitcher, even though the New York Yankee set the new Major League record for home runs in 1919, with 29 round-trippers. Pages 27 and 28 list every home that Ruth hit in his record-breaking 1919 season. The record book also has the complete 1920 schedule for both the American and National League teams. It is ironic that the book lists two of the Chicago "Black Sox" players from the 1919 season in the Chicago White Sox biographies. Thus, George "Buck" Weaver and Joe Jackson are included because the Black Sox scandal did not become public knowledge until near the conclusion of the 1920 season, and so of the three Chicago White Sox stars whose bios are included, the bios of Weaver and Jackson bracket the bio of Dickie Kerr, the honest pitcher who was a hero of the 1919 World Series. The record book is over 100 years old, and its cover shows wear, with a partial tear along the cover's lower binding of about two inches and some places along the spine, edges, and corners (such as the top left corner) in which the cover page is worn, loose, or partially worn off. There is also some slight darkening of the pages because of age. Aside from the aforementioned imperfections, the book is in excellent condition, and it offers an intriguing, detailed look at vintage baseball from over a century in the past.
