1920s Draper & Maynard "Skull" Golf Ball Counter Display
A unique figural two-piece skull from the 1920s, composed of chalk, this sat on a counter-top in a sporting goods store as a promotion for Draper and Maynard "Skull" model of golf balls, which had a skull and cross bones logo. There was a preoccupation during the late Victorian era through the 1920s, with gravedigging and morbid items, including skulls and crossbones. This piece is a manifestation of this preoccupation and was made to get the buyer's attention. The figural golf ball, which serves as the handle, is marked D&M. The bottom has an incised maker's mark but we are unable to make it out. It measures 7.75" long and stands 6.75" tall, and condition is excellent. This piece is exceedingly rare as we have never seen it before.
