1920s Ty Cobb Jr. Handwritten Letter to Ty Cobb with Original Photograph

1920s Ty Cobb Jr. Handwritten Letter to Ty Cobb with Original Photograph

Original two-page handwritten letter (on both sides of a single sheet) from Ty Cobb Jr. to his father, along with an original studio photograph of Ty Cobb Jr. In his letter, dated only "March 15 Augusta, Ga," the younger Cobb asks his father for five dollars to join the Y.M.C.A and requests a brand new pair of baseball shoes (size 4). In his post script he mentions that Beverly (his younger sister) "is learning to talk fast." It is signed "Your Son Ty Cobb Jr." Both the text and signature are scripted in black fountain pen and grade 8/10 overall. Ty Cobb Jr. was born in 1910 and this letter appears to be that of a ten-year old. Beverly was born in 1919, so that fact that she had just started talking most likely dates the letter to around 1920. The letter, on an unlined sheet of white paper (5x6.5") displays a horizontal fold and light, scattered toning. Accompanied by a formal studio photograph of Ty Cobb Jr., that appears to picture him at approximately the age of ten or eleven. The photographer's credit (Champlain Studios; Boston, New York, and Philadelphia) appears at the base of the mount and on the outside of the original photographic folder. The photo (5.5x9") remains affixed to its original mount and displays wear along the borders that is hidden by the mount. Housed in its original photographic folder.
