1924 Christy Mathewson "Last" Signed Check with Stern Letter from Mrs. Mathewson (PSA MINT 9)
One of the true Grails of checks and the nicest. Along with Lou Gehrig, Matty is the one. And this check is a special one sent out to a persistent early collector from of all places, the Bronx. There is a return note on his letter which is both entertaining and of vital import to the piece. It connects it directly to Mrs. Christy Mathewson establishing provenance and cements authenticity. Plus, it is an introspection into the old line sports collecting hobby and at the same time tells us that things have really not changed that much. Mrs. Matty has sent the letter back with a handwritten note, "I am sending you the last autograph I can give to the boys in the Bronx area. Please tell them it is useless to write for one, Sincerely, Mrs. C. Mathewson". For your edification, Jane Stoughton Mathewson passed away in 1967 dating this exchange. Check is made out to Griffin's (?). Check as a minor tear but still presents beautifully in a PSA encapsulated holder. Signature is graded PSA MINT 9 and the Mrs. Christy Mathewson letter is also certified authentic by PSA.
