1929 World Series Game 5 Ticket Stub PSA VG 3
Displayed is a 1929 World Series Game 5 ticket stub to the Oct. 14th game featuring the Philadelphia Athletics' come-from-behind walk-off 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs to give the Athletics their fourth World Championship. The Athletics were skippered by Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack, and the Cubs skippered by Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy. Philadelphia's line-up included Hall of Famers Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, and Jimmie Foxx, and pitcher Lefty Grove - not used in the game. The Cubs line-up included Hall of Famers Rogers Hornsby, Hack Wilson, and Kiki Cuyler. The Tigers scored first when they notched two runs off Athletics' starter Howard Ehmke in the 4th inning on RBI singles by Charlie Grimm and Zach Taylor. With two out in the 4th inning, Rube Wahlberg came in to pitch for Philadelphia, and he shut out the Tigers through the 9th inning. In the bottom of the 9th, the Athletics scored on a two-run homer by Mule Haas to tie the game. Then, with two outs, the Athletics won the game on a single by Bing Miller to score Al Simmons from second base. In a few weeks would come the momentous stock market crash of 1929. The Great Depression began, and the Athletics' owner and manager, Connie Mack, suffering at the box office as the Depression deepened, would be forced to sell off his stars and decimate the Athletics' talent in order to keep the team from bankruptcy. This World Series was the last gasp for the powerful Philadelphia Athletics of the 1920s. The ticket stub measures 2.4x5". The ticket stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded VG 3. The ticket stub is a remembrance of the last great hurrah of one of Connie Mack's Athletic dynasties.
