1932 Branch Rickey Signed Agreements (2)
Onion-skin documents carry the signature of one of baseball's heaviest hitters -- but Branch Rickey distinguished himself behind a desk. A pair of 1932 contracts (EX) promoting players to Rickey's St. Louis Cardinals are highlighted by Rickey's John Hancock at the bottom. A few stains, chips and delicate creases make a vintage framework for the Rickey signatures (NRMT), which appear as if they just flowed from his fountain pen. Later as chief executive of the Dodgers, Rickey signed one of baseball's most important papers, the contract of Jackie Robinson. He also invented the modern farm system and helped develop the batting helmet. There's a lot behind that signature, and it has company on one of the contracts. The co-signer is Larry MacPhail, the Hall of Fame executive who was behind baseball's first night game.
