1933 Washington Senators World Series Program

1933 Washington Senators World Series Program

Presented is a 1933 World Series program that includes information on the National League pennant winning New York Giants and the American League champion Washington Senators. The Giants won the World Series 4-1 in games. Displayed is the home program for the Washington Senators that could have been for any of Games 3-5 held at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. Both teams had player-managers, and each of the managers is pictured on the program cover: first baseman Bill Terry for New York and shortstop Joe Cronin for Washington. Hall of Fame players for the Giants in the program: Terry, outfielder Mel Ott, third baseman Travis Jackson, and pitcher Carl Hubbell. Hall of Fame players in the program for Washington: Cronin, and outfielders Goose Goslin, Heinie Manush, and Sam Rice. Although the offering says, "Official Score Card World's Series 1933," the 16-page booklet, measuring approx. 7.75x10.6", contains photos of almost all of the players and brief player bios as well as a scorecard, so it is in actuality more like a program, not merely a scorecard. The scorecard pages in the program have not been scored, but two pitchers' names have been written in by an unknown hand in pencil. On the page for the Giants' lineup is penciled Fitzsimmons and on the page for the Senators' lineup is penciled Crowder. Since these two pitchers did not start against each other in any of the three games in Washington, it is unclear in which game this program may have been used. New York left-hander Hubbell was the Series MVP as he started two games, going 2-0 in 20 innings of scoreless throwing. Cronin went 7 for 22 for Washington, with a .318 batting average, while Mel Ott went 7 for 18, hitting .389 with two homers for New York. The program has some very small stains, particularly on the front and back covers, but it is in overall excellent condition.
