1934 Detroit Tigers American League Champions "Black" Bat - The Rarest of Them All!

1934 Detroit Tigers American League Champions "Black" Bat - The Rarest of Them All!

This exquisite offering is the very first of the presentational bats made by Hillerich & Bradsby that were given to the team members of both league champions. You'll notice, the "black bats," as they are now known, were not quite black at the time. For the first couple years they were brown and in later years they were colored black. Another interesting tidbit is that in 1934, H&B made the bats for the Tigers only, while the World Champion Cardinals did not receive them. We are not sure why this was. This professional model bat measures 35" and weighs 40 oz. It is the type of bat used by Mickey Cochrane, whose name appears at the end of the barrel. Other team members present on the bat are Greenberg, Gehringer, York, White, Rowe, Owen, Goslin, Bridges, Auker, Clifton and more, with a total of 20 burned-in facsimile signatures around the barrel (some with "Trade Mark" and some without). There is nothing on the knob end. With less than a handful of these known to exist, this is by far the rarest of all the H&B presentational bats. The icing on the cake is that it's in NM condition!
