1934 Tour of Japan Autograph Book with Program and First Time Seen Newspaper Inserts
International play in baseball dates all the way back to the 1930s. This incredible collection from a 1934 tour that MLB all stars made to play the all stars of Japan includes several never-before-seen photographs, newspaper clippings and an autograph book, which the autograph collector dated for 1931. Classic Japanese newspaper in VG condition with foxing and some glue residue feature players like Babe Ruth, Lefty Gomez, Lou Gehrig and many more. The game program, which is in excellent condition with some foxing and a slight crease and small tear, includes autographs of some of the American stars, obtained in person at the time of the tour, on the given player’s picture in the book. These include HOFers Gomez, Charlie Gehringer, Earl Averill, as well as Frank “Lefty” O’Doul and Moe Berg, whom he assume wasn’t on a spy mission. Signatures average 8/10. The collection was obtained by the consignor’s father who was a teacher in Japan. He personally snapped several photographs, including American team during introductions and a dugout shot. A leather bound autograph book in very good condition with slightlly faded edges includes signatures of legends such as Ruth, Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Gomez and others (grading 8.5/10). A rare collection of baseball’s earliest foray into international play.
