1937 Ty Cobb Signed Hunting License w/Newspaper Provenance (PSA)

1937 Ty Cobb Signed Hunting License w/Newspaper Provenance (PSA)

1937 Oregon "Application for Game License" filled out and signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. This piece has a unique provenance that was documented in a newspaper article printed in the April 14, 2002, issue of The Sunday Oregonian. According to the article (which accompanies the piece), Edsel Calvin was fourteen years old when Ty Cobb entered his father's sporting goods store and applied for a hunting license. Even though Cobb had been retired for nine years, the boy immediately recognized him, and recalled that he also purchased a pack of cigarettes with the license. As noted in the article, this was the application for the license and once the license was issued, the application was normally discarded. In this instance, Calvin kept it as a souvenir, and it remained in his possession for over sixty years. Cobb has filled out the license in pencil, making note of his age ("50"), height ("6 3/4"), hair color ("Light"), and his address ("Menlo Park, Calif"). He has signed the application using his full name, "Tyrus R. Cobb," with the signature grading 9/10. Cobb, of course, was an avid hunter throughout his life, so he probably applied for hundreds of game licenses over the year, but very few of those applications were ever saved. This is one of those rare survivors that also has the added bonus of a documented history. The application (3.75x6") displays three horizontal folds and light, scattered toning. It has been mounted (by means of an adhesive on the reverse) and is otherwise in apparent Excellent condition. Matted together with a clipping (12x6.5") of the original newspaper article (which pictures this very piece) and a black-and-white photo (3.75x5.75"; modern print) of Cobb. Framed to total dimensions of 18x21.25". Full LOA from PSA.
