1938 & '39 Who's Who in the Major Leagues Autograph Collection with Lou Gehrig (700+ Signatures)

Presented is an amazing testament to one fans' passion for the game. The offered collection, assembled first hand by our consignor, consists of two volumes of "Who's Who in the Major Leagues", one dating to 1938 and the other to 1939. The vintage volumes of baseball history are loaded with a magnificent array of period baseball autographs. The bold fountain pen signatures are penned neatly throughout the books, with the large majority accomplished in the vicinity of the given signers' image or bio. The autographs include a total of sixty different Hall of Famers, many signing in more than one location. Highlights of this star studded group include: Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott (3), Chuck Klein (3), Arky Vaughan, Bill Klem, Al Simmons, Tony Lazzeri, Ted Williams (1939 Rookie Signature), Joe DiMaggio (1939 Signature), Dizzy Dean, Pie Traynor, Connie Mack, Casey Stengel, Joe McCarthy, Bill Dickey, Cal Hubbard, Hank Greenberg (3), Mickey Cochrane, Earle Combs, Red Ruffing (3) and Lefty Gomez (4). In addition, there are plenty of scarce non-Hall of Fame signatures such as: Willard Hershberger (2), Jake Powell, Morrie Arnovich, Bump Hadley, Bill Knickerbocker, Tommy Bridges, Muddy Ruel, Oscar Vitt, Earle Mack, Stan Hack, Danny MacFayden, Ira Hutchinson, Joe Gordon and Schoolboy Rowe. Accompanying the books is a vintage 8x10" black and white photo of Hank Greenberg, signed boldly in blue ballpoint. The majority of signatures in this collection remain in fabulous condition, averaging 9 out of a possible 10. The two volumes of "Who's Who" have been secured to heavy stock covers (sturdier paper that has been glued to the outside cover of each book to better protect the contents) and show general age wear throughout the pages, including various amounts of soiling and toning. The Greenberg photo grades VG with light staining and and several small sections of paper loss around the edges. This is a true treasure-trove of baseball autographs with tremendous break potential.
