1938 Brooklyn Dodgers Night Game Light Bulb Full Ticket Proof PSA Authentic (Only Known Example)

1938 Brooklyn Dodgers Night Game Light Bulb Full Ticket Proof PSA Authentic (Only Known Example)

Presented is a ticket proof to the August 19, 1938, Brooklyn Dodgers home night game against the Boston Bees, one of only six home night games for the Dodgers at Ebbets Field in '38, the team's first season with home field lights. In the 1930s, the Brooklyn Dodgers were a struggling franchise, both on the field and at the gate. Trying to boost attendance, the Dodgers installed lights at Ebbets Field in '38, becoming the second team in Major League baseball to do so, following the Cincinnati Reds, who installed lights in 1935, and hosted the first Major League night game on May 24th of that year when the Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1, at Crosley Field. The Dodgers first ever home night game was on June 15, 1938, at Ebbets Field when the Dodgers lost to the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 as Johnny Vander Meer pitched his second consecutive no-hitter. In 1938, the Dodgers scheduled six home night games, one against each of the other National League teams except the New York Giants, who refused to play a night game. In the August 19th game, Brooklyn and Boston were scoreless going into the bottom of the eleventh inning. With two outs, Cookie Lavagetto singled in the winning run to give Fred Frankhouse, who went the distance, the victory. Losing pitcher Lou Fette threw a complete game. Some notable players in the game: Leo Durocher was at shortstop for Brooklyn, and he later became a Hall of Fame manager; Vince DiMaggio, brother of Joe and Vince DiMaggio, played center field for the Bees. The ticket proof is shaped like a lightbulb with a baseball on top, and it measures approx. 1.25x6.25". The proof also has an image of a lightbulb and a baseball. The proof has been punch-stamped "void" in three places. In part, the ticket proof reads, "Brooklyn National League Base Ball Club Night Game 6/Lower Stand NIGHT GAME/...$1.65." The void, not valid for admission proof ticket has been encapsulated and certified PSA FULL AUTHENTIC. The proof ticket exhibits some darkening, yet is in excellent condition, and its unique shape and images portray the novelty that night baseball was at this time.
