1938 Horrors of War Near Complete Set with (16) PSA & SGC Graded (285/288)
In 1938, Gum Inc. produced perhaps the most iconic of all non-sport sets, Horrors of War. Depicting violent and sometimes gruesome images from the Sino-Japanese war and the early days of World War II, this set quickly became the one to have for the youths of the day, and continues to be one of the most popular non-sports sets to collectors today. The low numbers (1-48) and the high numbers (241-288) grade a fairly uniform G-VG, with about 10% better and a similar number lesser; a fair number of cards show creases. The mid-series (#s 49-240) grade mostly VG-EX to EX, with about 10% better and 5% lesser. 16 cards have been professionally graded: #60 (PSA 3), #66 (PSA 3), #202 (4.5), #217 (PSA 3), #218 (PSA 5), #223 (SGC 80), #224 (PSA 3), #226 (SGC 80), #228 (PSA 3), #231 (SGC 70), #233 (PSA 3), #235 (PSA 5), #237 (SGC 70), #238 (PSA 2), #239 (PSA 4) and #240 (PSA 4). The keys grade #1 (PR, with significant paper loss on front), #277 (FR-GD), #283 (VG-EX, light stain) and #286 (GD, m/c). Missing cards are 193, 234 and 279 for completion. Fill in/upgrade about 20 cards and you’ll have one very nice set.
