1938 R69 Horrors of War Near Complete Set (251/288)
In 1938, Gum Inc. produced perhaps the most iconic of all non-sport sets, Horrors of War. Depicting violent and sometimes gruesome images from the Sino-Japanese war and the early days of World War II, this set quickly became the one to have for the youths of the day, and continues to be one of the most popular non-sports sets to collectors today. Only 17 of the first 48 cards (the first series) are present and grade a fairly uniform GD to VG, with a handful lesser. The remaining cards (including the last series, #’s 241-288) grade significantly better, with many being EX to EX-MT (with 15% nicer and 15% lesser). Among the tougher cards included are #240 (“The Frightful Cost of War”, VG-EX+), #277 (“Hitler’s Border Tour”’, GD, surface scuff marks), #283 (“Hitler Threatens Force’’, GD-VG, roller pulls), #286 (“Chamberlain Meets Hitler’’, GD, light crease, somewhat dirty) and the last card #288 (VG-EX, oc, slight paper loss on reverse). Card #1 and 30 others are missing from the first series, only 6 are missing from #’s 49 thru 240 (#150, 165, 202, 220, 236 and 238) - and the high number run is complete! A fine, near-complete set of a great non-sport issue! Total of 245 cards.
