1938 Seabiscuit and War Admiral Match Race Photos (16)

1938 Seabiscuit and War Admiral Match Race Photos (16)

Although the actual match took place with much hoopla at Pimlico racetrack in Maryland, there was also a similar amount of excitement prior to the initial scheduled race a few months earlier. Originally, the famous match race was scheduled for Memorial Day at Belmont Park, about five months before the actual event. Due to problems with Seabiscuit’s legs, the race was called off at the last minute. Included are sixteen photographs, many in extremely fine condition representing the actual race and preparations both at Belmont and at Pimlico contained in an archival album. Included are: At Belmont Park (6): including jockeys Red Pollard & Charley Kurtsinger in silks of the combatants, shaking hands. Three photos of War Admiral training for the Memorial Day race with another picture at Belmont with Kurtsinger aboard. Also, beautiful photo of Seabiscuit facing front, standing in stall after workout at Belmont. At Pimlico (6): Kurtsinger with silks & saddle before race, and jockey on lead pony leading War Admiral to workout in photo by Joe Fleischer. Two other photos of War Admiral, one with trainer outside stall. Owners Sam Riddle and Vanderbilt on race day before event & jockey George Woolf with saddle on day prior. Match race (4): Kurtsinger congratulating Woolf, photo of the finish, 3.25x6.5”, presentation, and large 11x14" compilation of various photos; going to post, they’re off, down the stretch, the finish, winner’s circle, presentation, & the new champ.
